School Programs

The Springfield Museums create memorable experiences for school age students by enhancing schools' science, social studies, language arts or art curriculum. We offer a broad range of programs for all grades and interest levels. Teachers may choose from a series of special interpretive tours, science demonstrations, art discovery programs and local history activities. Our programs can be mixed and matched to create an interdisciplinary field trip. All programs are designed to connect with the Massachusetts State Curriculum Frameworks. Most programs last from 1 - 1.5 hours and may also include a show in our Seymour Planetarium.

The Museum School

The Museum School began in 1918 when several boys visited the Museum and asked permission to sketch in the Museum's recently opened gallery containing plaster cast reproductions of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures. The curator enthusiastically gave her approval and the boys began to sketch each weekend in Sculpture Hall. It is from this informal project that the Museum's art program grew. This informal art class grew into a Museum school that offers over 240 courses a year in art and music appreciation, book arts, studio fine arts, sciences, history, genealogy and specialized topics.

The Museum School is an education program designed to provide adults and children (ages 4 and up) the opportunity to broaden and expand their knowledge and appreciation for the arts, history and sciences. The majority of courses draw directly upon the Museums' special exhibits and permanent collections. The average enrollment is 1,400 students per year. In addition to science, history and art courses, the School offers daytime bus trips, overseas travel and weekend tours to cultural destinations.
