The Stations of the Cross refer to the depiction of activities during the final hours (known as the Passion) of Jesus Christ’s life. The events are often commemorated during the Season of Lent, especially on Good Friday when Jesus is believed to have been crucified. This print illustrates the Third Station, when Christ falls carrying the heavy cross on his shoulders. Although his fatigue is obvious, he is chastised. One of the goals of the Stations of the Cross was to remind believers of Christ’s suffering and death and to encourage prayer and meditation.
