Father’s Pride, Currier & Ives

D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts

Oval image in black and white with only red and rust highlighted in areas for color. Man seated with young boy on lap aside a round table – man dangling pocket watch for boy to see.

Currier & Ives reinforced the concept of the ideal family through prints of happy parents with their well-behaved children. The firm produced seven different versions of Father’s Pride, including this design with a father holding a child on his lap. The images reveal the Victorian way of thinking about child-rearing.
