Frozen Up, Currier & Ives

D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts

Winter scene. Oxen and cargo sleigh next to barn at center. Horse and cargo sleigh traveling to the right over bridge in front of barn.

This snowy rural scene, with its sense of tranquility and hominess, is the type of image for which Currier & Ives is best known. A man in a horse-drawn sleigh passes over a bridge near a waterwheel or grist mill while a loaded cart hitched to two healthy oxen stands in front of the house. White highlights on the trees and in the foreground help to create the frosty atmosphere of a cold winter’s day.
