D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts
Woman in red dress, soldier in blue uniform embracing her. Male child running by fence to greet soldier.
In this companion print to “Off for the War,” the soldier returns from war to the warm embrace of his wife and their child. In the background, his fellow soldiers continue their own march home. Series such as these inspired men to fight for the Union and all that was good, including their families and homes. It also reinforced the idea that soldiers returned home safely after performing their patriotic duty.
