Kitties Among the Roses, Currier & Ives

D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts

Two white kittens at center; one in basket to right facing viewer, other facing cat in basket. Red and pink roses in and out of basket.

Many Currier & Ives images were hand-colored by a stable of artists who worked for the popular lithography firm. This animal portrait titled Kitties Among the Roses, is an example of the rich color that could be achieved by the artists using layers of watercolor paint. The saturated pinks, blues and greens encircle the white kittens and bring the viewer’s attention to these furry pets as they play among the rosebuds.
