Life in the Country. “Out for a days shooting”, Currier & Ives

D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts

Two men in buggy with dual team horses riding down lane with two dogs running aside. House up lane left in background.

Many of the newly wealthy urbanites opted to build second homes in the country. In this print, one such home is pictured in the background. Its grand appearance is far from the simple homesteads of the western frontier or backwoods lodges. Genteel country homes provided an escape from the chaos of city life for the entire family. The men, in their sporty carriage, are dressed in their finest hunting clothes as they head out for a gentlemanly hunt.
