Heads of three horses all facing left but eyes on viewer. Center horse sporting red in bridle.
This dramatic print showcases the energy and fierceness of three celebrated horses of the day: Jay Eye See, Maud S. and St. Julien. In 1879, St. Julien established a track record at 2 minutes, 12 ¾ seconds. Jay Eye See, known as the “little black whirlwind,” was the first trotter to race a mile in 2 minutes and 10 seconds. Maud S. also broke several world records. Though Currier & Ives preferred to make images by hand-pulling prints from designs drawn on stone, the firm produced several prints with the newest technology, chromolithography. This process involved printing multiple colors on specially prepared printing plates and paper. Unlike earlier prints by Currier & Ives, which were printed on heavy rag paper and hand-colored, chromolithography provided a faster method of producing images and did not require hand-tinting.
