The Mother’s Blessing., Currier & Ives

D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts

Woman seated on bed nursing child lying asleep. Clothing on trunk lower left; mending on table behind woman. Verse at left of title: The wild bird has her nestlings all, high in the sheltering tree: Verse at right of title: Her faithful mate to hear her call, But I have only thee.

Otto Stark studied lithography at the University of Cincinnati’s School of Design before moving to New York to work as an illustrator. The artist exhibited twice at the Paris Salon while studying overseas. He produced two designs for Currier & Ives: The Mother’s Blessing and The Three White Kittens. This charming scene depicts a young child sleeping while a woman in a simple dress and cap sits nearby. Her hand is placed lovingly on the child’s face.
