Winter Morning, Currier & Ives

D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts

Winter scene. House in background, barn and animals in yard in left foreground. Rider and horse drawn sleigh approaching house.

This frosty scene illustrates one of the most popular themes of Currier & Ives prints, winter in New England. Winter Morning, with its bright sunlight and strong shadows idealizes a typical snowy day on a rural, country farm. The animals eat their breakfast behind a split-railed fence and look on as a man drives a sleigh up a snowy road toward the large farm house.
