Landscape scene. River with sailing boats in center background, couple walking a path toward the springs at left.
Fanny Palmer often borrowed Nathaniel Currier’s carriage to travel to the countryside to sketch scenes which she later incorporated into lithographs. Though she created images of places in New England, the South and the West, she actually never traveled farther than eastern New Jersey. In this beautiful tranquil scene celebrating the American landscape, civilization and nature are shown in harmony. Pictured through a fissure in the outcropping of the rock, a steamer and sailboats glide along the Hudson River while two people enjoy walking on the road and looking at the natural spring on the left.
