Who We Are

The Springfield Museums is a multidisciplinary, nonprofit organization comprised of five separate museums representing the disciplines of art, history, and science. The Museums were founded in 1857 and have evolved with each new generation of visitors. The Springfield Museums’ first freestanding museum building, the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum, opened to the public in 1896 as a space devoted to sharing the beauty of global cultures with the people of this city. This initial purpose has expanded to include themes of innovation, STEM learning, and literacy acquisition across many disciplines all intertwined with playful, transformative, and inspiring learning. Today, more than 450,000 annual visitors benefit from permanent collections, changing exhibitions, educational programs, and special events at the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum, the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts, the Springfield Science Museum, the Lyman and Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History, and the Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum

The Museums house rich, deep and varied collections that, especially when facilitated by our remarkable education staff, help visitors of all ages expand their understanding of other cultures, the natural world, and how history, arts, and science play a part in our daily lives. We strive for universal participation, welcoming diverse visitors from many communities and of all abilities. As a trusted community hub and educational partner, we work to make our resources accessible to all with relevant, relatable story telling. The Museums also actively pursue anti-racist practices, working to ensure those who have been under-represented have a voice and presence in every aspect of the Museums systems.

With an eye on equity, the Museums aim to make our resources accessible to all people, especially people from our neighborhood – all Springfield city residents, 31% who live below poverty level, receive free admission. Additionally, veterans and active service military receive free admission, EBT recipients from any state receive $3 admission, and registered human service agencies can bring clients at no cost. We provide complimentary passes to over 250 non-profit organizations for their own fundraising efforts. The Springfield Museums are a Universal Participation designated organization championing arts access through accessibility and inclusion.
