About Blake House

Built for Elijah Blake in 1839, Blake House is the oldest building on the Quadrangle, and originally stood on State Street. Blake was the chief engineer of the Springfield Fire Department, served in city government and in the state legislature in 1838.

The two-storied clapboard-faced Victorian style cottage features a hipped roof with wide, projecting eaves and wide corner boards. Some of the most charming architectural details of this unusual style building include the bamboo uprights and tin “tent” roof on the front porch.
