England, as an island country, has always had a complicated relationship with lands beyond its border seas. Explore the early history of England’s relationship with Catholic Europe, Islamic Asia and North Africa, and the Native peoples of the Americas. Discuss the maritime history of England, the ships and travelers who ventured to Italy, along the Silk Road, and in search of the Northwest Passage. Using maps, early drawings, architecture and the archaeological evidence, these beautifully illustrated lectures will present England in the light of its early territorial ambitions and creation of its national identity.
