Arms and Artists: The American Revolution Through Painters’ Eyes

May 18, 2017 @ 12:15 pm1:00 pm
| Cost: $4 | Cost for Members: $2

A key part of the founding of the United States was all the new imagery that was needed for a new nation. All the old British images – portraits of kings, queens, governors, and jurists, as well as pictures of British history- had become obsolete or offensive.  Almost overnight, there was an interest in images of American leaders and American history, which were provided by key artists of the Revolutionary generation: Charles Willson Peale, John Trumbull, and Gilbert Stuart.

Presented by Paul Staiti, PhD, Professor of Fine Arts, Mount Holyoke College
