Young Ted in Springfield

The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum

This interactive gallery brings Dr. Seuss’s Springfield childhood to life, exploring the places, family stories, and experiences that helped shape the imagination of one of the world’s most beloved storytellers.

Visitors can explore a recreation of Ted’s childhood home at 74 Fairfield Street, where young Ted famously drew on his bedroom walls—and where his mother encouraged his creativity. Try your hand at creating your own whimsical drawings on a digital version of his bedroom walls.

Continue the adventure through the places and experiences that inspired Ted’s imagination. Play baker in the Seuss Bakery, inspired by his grandparents’ Howard Street bakery; go fishing at McElligot’s Pool while learning about Ted’s childhood fishing trips with his father; explore the gears and gadgets of the Moose Juice and Goose Juice Brewery, inspired by his family’s Springfield brewing history; and imagine new creatures at the Forest Park Zoo, where Ted’s father served as superintendent and inspired If I Ran the Zoo.

Filled with hands-on activities, storytelling, and connections to Springfield history, this gallery invites visitors to experience the city that helped shape Dr. Seuss’s extraordinary imagination.
