Funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Springfield Museums’ recent digitization of the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum Archives revealed a treasure trove of unpublished images, documents, and correspondence. Although little-known, these important Archives tell the story of Springfield’s first art museum and shed light on the lives of benefactors George Walter Vincent Smith (1832-1923) and Belle Townsley Smith (1845-1928). Join the Springfield Museums’ Curator of Art, Maggie North, for a behind-the-scenes look at the process of scanning, re-housing, and cataloging the Archives in order to safeguard documents and share them with generations to come. North will also discuss highlights from the Archives, including historic photographs and letters that paint a rich picture of Springfield’s Gilded Age.
