The second of a two-semester survey course, this class essentially covers western art chronologically from the Renaissance to Modernism. While art theory will be discussed in class in connection with the cultural and historical contexts of each art piece, the focus of the course will be to visually deconstruct the artworks presented in class. The course will begin with the introduction of Fifteenth-Century Art in Northern Europe, followed by Renaissance Art in Fifteenth-Century Italy, Sixteenth-Century Art in Italy, Sixteenth-Century Art in Northern Europe and the Iberian Peninsula, Seventeenth-Century Art in Europe, Art of South and Southeast Asia after 13th Century, Chinese and Korean Art after 13th Century, Japanese Art after the 14th Century, Art of the Americas after 14th Century, Art of Pacific Cultures, Art of Africa in the Modern Era, Eighteenth and Early Nineteenth-Century Art in Europe and North America, Mid-to Late Nineteenth-Century Art in Europe and United States, Modern Art in Europe and the Americas, and the International Scene since 1950. A series of images will be presented every class in conjunction with a list of terms corresponding to the art period being studied.
