World Art History: Prehistoric Art – Renaissance

This class essentially covers world art chronologically from the earliest traces of human creativity until the Fourteenth century. While art theory will be discussed in class in connection with the cultural and historical contexts of each art piece, the focus of the course will be to visually de construct the artworks presented in class. Topics include but are not limited to: cave paintings, art of the Ancient Near East, Egyptian, Aegean, Ancient Greece, Etruscan, Roman, Jewish, Early Christian, Byzantine, Islamic, South and South East Asia, Chinese, Korean, Japanese Art, Art of the Americas, Art of Ancient Africa, Early Medieval Art in Europe, Romanesque Art, Gothic Art of the Twelfth and Thirteenth Centuries, and Fourteenth-Century Art in Europe. A series of images will be presented every class with a list of terms corresponding to the art period being studied. Students will engage in class discussion regarding each presented piece.
