Our day in Newport begins at The Elms, the summer retreat of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind, prominent figures from Philadelphia and New York who commissioned Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer to design a residence inspired by the mid-18th century French chateau d’Asnieres near Paris. Today, the Elms houses an outstanding collection of paintings, statuary and tapestries, and its landscape features formal gardens, terraces, pavilions and fountains.
Following lunch at the La Forge Restaurant on Bellevue Avenue, immerse yourself in the fragrances of abundant summer blooms in the elegance of Newport’s Rosecliff mansion at the Newport Flower Show “A Floral Fair.” This annual event celebrates the beauty of floral design amidst the grandeur of one of Newport’s most iconic Gilded Age estates. Explore exquisite displays in the salon, ballroom and dining room. On the terrace, admire the horticultural entries before stepping out into the oceanside back lawn to explore beautiful garden displays. There will be free time to browse the Flower Show Marketplace on the grounds of Rosecliff, offering a variety of floral and plant options, as well as unique home decor items for purchase.
