Afflicted and Blue: How the Civil War Transformed Disability

November 13, 2025 @ 12:15 pm1:30 pm
| Cost: $4 | Cost for Members: FREE

This presentation will examine the experiences of disabled Civil War veterans and how the political, economic, and cultural responses to the Civil War represented a profound shift in what it meant to be disabled in America.  For soldiers disabled by the most destructive war in American history, some of the effects of this transformation were positive.  Others were less so.  Warder will share numerous primary sources to illustrate this massive change in the way the nation responded to disability.

Presented by Graham Warder, Associate Professor of History, Keene State College
