In this 2-hour class, participants can create straw art pictures or cards, or make a hanging decoration. Straw art pictures are traditionally created in China, India, Russia, Serbia, Eastern Europe, and Scandinavia, although not always in relation to Christmas. Eastern European countries and Scandinavia are more specifically related to straw art holiday traditions and include a wide array of holiday cards and pictures. Samples will be available for participants to develop their ideas. Cards and pictures are created from wheat straw that is boiled, ironed, flattened, glued to backing and cut into designs. Hanging decorations are traditionally made from wheat straw that is pre-soaked or boiled and sewn together to create both 2D and 3D forms. Hanging decorations can also be made from commercial straw if participants prefer, as it is does not require any preparation and is easier to sew.
