Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with Art
September 15 – October 15 marks Hispanic Heritage Month. The Springfield Museums would like to showcase some of the works in our collection by contemporary Hispanic/Latinx artists.

Mixed media on paper
Gift of Richard Muhlberger
93.13
In the 1980s, O’Neill created a number of vibrant self-portraits that explore, in the artist’s own words, “me and my circumstances.” Her portraits use a fragmented narrative consisting scattered personal details and symbols, united visually by her expressive style.

Fall From Grace, 1993
Encaustic and oil on canvas
The Lee Acquisitions Fund

Arnaldo Roche-Rabell was influenced by Neo-Expressionism and is considered one of the most important painters of the movement. This self-portrait shows a table overflowing with luscious tropical fruits and ferns, reminiscent of Puerto Rico, and a disembodied head staring upwards. One eye in the portrait is blue and the other brown, referring to the bicultural tension of living in both Puerto Rico and the United States.

Gabriela, 2014
Watercolor
Gift of Edgardo Abello
2015.D01
This beautiful portrait portrays Connecticut-based artist Edgardo Abello’s daughter, Gabriela. The work joined the collection of the D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts after it was exhibited in 2014.
