Currier & Ives published numerous prints to promote the American dream and the idea of a promised land. The American Homestead series illustrates traditional New England homes through the seasons of winter, spring, summer and autumn. These prints celebrated the beauty, order and prosperity of the growing nation as if all Americans shared this ideal. Interestingly, Currier & Ives opted not to include city dwellings in the series even though many citizens lived in urban areas. Instead they focused on nostalgic and popular rural scenes. American Homestead Winter illustrates the simple harmony of country life with a couple taking a ride in a horse-drawn sleigh, a gentleman gathering wood for a fire with his loyal companion at his side, and other chores being tended to in the barn on the left and at the side of the main house.
