Currier & Ives recorded contemporary news events and produced prints that documented the lives and deaths of many important American figures. This print, produced by Nathaniel Currier, honors the death of General Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States. Nicknamed “Old Hickory,” Jackson was known for his toughness and strength. He suffered throughout his presidency from complications from a musket ball that was imbedded in his lung and never removed. This dramatic image depicts the moment of his death at The Hermitage on June 8, 1845, at the age of 78.
