The First Load, Currier & Ives portray the end of a satisfying day of work. A huge stack of hay has been loaded into the back of the cart and children ride on top of the bales rather than in the seats. A young man leads the cart toward the town while the father of the children, carrying a pitchfork and rake, talks with them. The dog, now walking quietly, indicates that the activities of the day have been completed and all are now heading home.
