Prairie scene. Hunter a top a horse riding aside a buffalo at center. Another hunter, horse and buffalo at rear.
Currier & Ives created numerous images depicting hunting scenes on the American plains. Bison or the American buffalo were hunted almost to extinction and their population was reduced to a few hundred by the mid-1800s. The excitement and drama of the hunt appealed to Americans as they contemplated the perils and opportunities of westward expansion.
