Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th President of the United States. He achieved international fame and became one of the nation’s great heroes in the Civil War. He commanded Union forces as a general and as a general-in-chief (1864–1869). Historians usually place Grant in the top ranks of great military leaders and have described him as “the greatest general of his age and one of the greatest strategists of any age.” He forced the surrender of Robert E. Lee, general of the Confederate forces, at Appomattox, ending the Civil War in 1865.
