Life in the Woods: “Returning to Camp”, Currier & Ives

D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts

Two boats of men having been hunting along with their dogs and meeting along a riverbank.

After Louis Maurer American, 1832-1932 The sportsman’s passion for hunting paralleled his fascination with the trappers and hunters of the West. While most men were not able to face the challenges of the frontier, they were able to hunt and fish in the wilderness of upstate New York. A retreat to the forest also provided a time for rejuvenation. This print shows one such trip to the Adirondacks. Sportsmen return from a successful day of hunting and fishing with their plentiful catches. The scene symbolizes the bounty of the American wilderness.
