Currier & Ives produced thirteen different prints about the adventures of “my little white kittie.” The newly prosperous middle-class enjoyed the luxury of caring for feline companions and it became not only acceptable, but desirable to keep a pet. Long-haired white cats were especially prized as they provided a beautiful decoration to any room. In fact, the “cat craze” became so popular that many products were advertised showing a cat or cats even if the product had nothing to do with them. With cats now kept indoors, the Victorians enjoyed a double benefit – beautiful and amusing companions who kept their households rodent-free.
