After Frances Flora Bond Palmer American, 1812-1876 Frances (Fanny) Palmer, one of Currier & Ives’ most important artists, designed numerous views of New York from nearby scenic locations. Here, she has captured the growing success of New York commerce, represented by the many boats in the bay. She also illustrated the bucolic character of Long Island, shown by the man picking apples. In the background, Manhattan is at the far right and Bedlow’s Island at the far left. The composition was designed to appeal to both city and country residents.
