Soldier in uniform standing in gate of yard embracing wife with son at his side embracing both.
Currier & Ives published several versions of “Off for the War,” and a companion print, “Home from the War.” In this edition, the soldier, who wears a simple uniform and has his rifle nearby, embraces his family in front of their respectable home. Many of the prints published by Currier & Ives during the Civil War focused on the family. Images of loved ones going off to war and pictures of their return home were sentimental and provided inspiration for both soldiers and their families.
