D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts

Three puppies to right with mother dog to left. Mother has a mouse under her paw.

In The First Lesson, a mother dog and her young pups are gathered around a large rodent. The mother is demonstrating a trapping technique as part of a hunting lesson. Dogs often were depended upon to get rid of undesirable creatures that infested early American farms and city residents.
