Life in American cities was often difficult, and Currier & Ives produced a number of prints that depicted the challenges of living a good and moral existence. Alcohol consumption was of special concern. In this work, the firm illustrates the bad effects of drink by showing a homeless family walking down a bleak path. This image was also published by Currier & Ives under the title The Bad Husband.
