The Landing of Columbus, Currier & Ives

D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts

Columbus standing in row boat at front ready to step onto land; 7 other men in row boat. Ship in background at right.

Currier & Ives produced images that provided the citizens of the young nation with a sense of American history and identity. More than 250 prints depicted the historical events of the new country and included scenes such as The Landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth (1846) and this image of The Landing of Columbus. Currier & Ives documented Columbus’ discovery of the New World on four different occasions and portrayed the explorer as a great man who followed the American belief of Manifest Destiny.
