The race between the American yacht “Sappho” and the English yacht “Livonia” took place in New York Harbor on October 21, 1871. The challenge was for the Queen’s Cup, which would later be known as the America’s Cup. “Sappho” was the clear winner of the race by a half an hour. Two days later, on October 23, “Sappho” again beat “Livonia,” this time by more than 25 minutes, and the Cup remained in New York.
