According to Christian belief, after the crucifixion of Jesus, his body was placed in a tomb and sealed with a large boulder. When the tomb was opened, the body had disappeared. Mary Magdalene, in her belief that someone stole the body, began to cry. She was comforted by a man standing next to her who she discovered was Jesus, resurrected from the dead. In this Currier & Ives image of The Resurrection, two soldiers are shown awestruck as Christ ascends surrounded by cherubs.
