The Sunset Tree, Currier & Ives

D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts

Woodland scene. Three women at left seated with dog at their feet; one looking at man down path to right in background.

The subject of mother and child has been explored for centuries through art. However, a more personal nature of the relationship was celebrated during the 18th and 19th centuries and exemplified through a new interest in the individual. Nathaniel Currier presents a scene of maternal affection. The printmaker produced a series of prints of the ideal mother who calmly maintained the home and oversaw child rearing while maintaining a fashionable appearance.
