The Woodland Gate, Nathaniel Currier

D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts

Pastoral scene – gate across lane being pushed open by young boy while three friends hang on.

After William Collins R.A. English, 1788 – 1847 William Collins was a popular English painter who excelled at creating images of children as well as other genre scenes. He designed three images for Currier & Ives including The Woodland Gate. In this playful scene, four children swing on a split-rail gate on a summer afternoon. One boy, balancing on the top rail, gleefully throws his hands into the air as another barefoot boy pushes the gate. Currier & Ives published many images which celebrated childhood and evoked a sense of nostalgia.
