The image of Jesus Christ crucified on the cross, is an important visual in the Catholic faith. The event is recorded in all four Gospels. A critical aspect of Christian doctrine, the suffering and death of Christ was considered necessary for the forgiveness of sins. It was believed to have taken place under the governorship of Pontius Pilate (26 – 36AD) on a Friday on or near Passover.
