The America’s Cup is a trophy awarded to the winner of the America’s Cup match races between two yachts. One yacht, known as the defender, represents the yacht club which is the current holder of the America’s Cup and the second yacht, known as the challenger, represents the yacht club which is challenging for the cup. Begun in 1851, the America’s Cup is the oldest active trophy in international sport. This Currier & Ives print shows the great race in 1881 between sloop yachts Mischief and Atlanta. This was the first year that sloops were entered in the race and Atlanta was defeated when sloop Mischief won the contest.
