Visions of the Supernatural

October 24, 2026–February 7, 2027 G.W.V. Smith Art Museum

Celebrate the reopening of the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum with Visions of the Supernatural, an immersive exhibition that reveals the museum’s remarkable collection of mysterious treasures while exploring our enduring fascination with spirits, ghosts, magic, and the unexplained.

For centuries, people have sought to unlock the secrets of the afterlife. During the Victorian era, the Spiritualist movement captivated millions, offering grieving families hope that communication with the dead was possible through séances, mediums, spirit photography, automatic writing, and other paranormal practices. Drawing from the  extraordinary collections, of the Springfield Museums Visions of the Supernatural examines the beliefs, rituals, objects, and cultural phenomena that shaped this remarkable chapter in history.

Throughout the museum, visitors are invited to step into the world of the supernatural through engaging hands-on experiences. Try your hand at automatic writing, pose for Victorian-style ghost photography, consult Ouija boards, gaze into crystal balls, discover the symbolic meanings of gemstones and crystals, read Tarot cards in a recreated Victorian parlor, and encounter animals, strange creatures and objects long associated with supernatural beliefs—if you dare.

Blending history, mystery, art, and folklore, Visions of the Supernatural transforms the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum into an unforgettable journey through the strange, the mystical, and the unknown.
