Tour the mansion and expansive gardens of Blithewold, an impressive estate on 33 acres in Bristol, RI. The Mansion and its grounds were established in the 1890s by Augustus and Bessie Van Wickle as their summer retreat. The 45-room mansion, filled with family heirlooms is surrounded by a series of lovely gardens that range in character from mysterious to exotic with an exceptional collection of rare and unusual plants, specimen trees and an accessible greenhouse. After a traditional tea lunch, we will visit Sakonnet Garden, a private home and garden in Little Compton, RI. This exotic cottage garden features a series of high-walled rooms that create micro climates for growing marginally hardy species in the coastal Rhode Island climate (Zone 7). Imbedded within a native coastal-fields landscape, Sakonnet Garden is a long-term project with ongoing experiments in design, scale, and spectacular plantings by John Gwynne and Mikel Folcarelli.
