Enjoy a performance of Carmen at the Alice Busch Opera Theater located on the shore of Otsego Lake – the “Glimmerglass” of James Fenimore Cooper’s Leatherstocking Tales. Written by French composer Georges Bizet, Carmen is one of the most popular operas ever produced. It also is the best-known example of opéra-comique, a genre of French opera not necessarily comic but featuring both spoken dialogue and sung portions. The character of Carmen is at once familiar and inscrutable — an outsider who acknowledges no law but her own. Her fiery, irresistible song serves both to draw people in and keep them at arm’s length. The most recognizable music, the Toréador Song and Habanera, remain pop culture favorites today. Enjoy a group lunch before the performance.
