In 2024, with the support of grant funding from the Springfield Cultural Council, the Springfield Dementia Friendly Coalition Quilt came to life. The quilt is more than fabric and thread—it is a profound expression of love, remembrance, and solidarity within our community. Created with care and intention, the quilt stands as a tangible testament to shared experiences and support for individuals and families affected by dementia. Since its inception, it has served as a centerpiece of connection, a symbol of resilience, and a reminder of the stories that bind us together.
The Springfield Dementia Friendly Coalition (SDFC) is a grass roots community group dedicated to raising awareness about dementia and fostering a supportive environment for those impacted by this illness. Members of the Coalition sought a way to unify the community, spark conversations, and honor the lives touched by dementia. The idea of creating a quilt emerged as an ideal medium-not only for its historical role in storytelling but also its ability to weave together diverse voices and experiences. Through their work they aim to not only raise awareness about dementia in our community, but also remove the stigma and shame associated with talking about dementia. Their new quilt project, Remembering Us, is enriched by the voices of the contributors, who have poured their emotions and memories into each square.
