“Dresses set beautiful” explores the work of women of color in the Connecticut River Valley’s clothing trades, particularly in Hartford, Connecticut and Springfield, Massachusetts. Drawing on census records, city directories, and family papers, the paper will share glimpses into the lives of several Black craftswomen—dressmakers, milliners, and costumers—who lived and worked in the mid-19th-century Valley.

Presented by Marla Miller, Distinguished Professor of History, Department of History, University of Massachusetts-Amherst
