Edward M. Bannister was the 1st African American painter to win a major award in the United States. He received the first place Bronze medal for exhibiting Under the Oaks at The 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. The first part of the presentation will cover Bannister’s life in New Brunswick (Canada), Boston MA, and Providence R.I. The second part of the talk will track Under the Oak‘s journey from the 1876 regional exhibition in Boston MA to 1876 Philadelphia Exhibition, and over time, to Springfield MA.
