Frontline, March For Our Lives, Chicago: The Story Behind the Photograph

February 4, 2021 @ 12:15 pm1:00 pm

Presentations will take place via the video conferencing app ZOOM. Please register in advance in order to access the program.

A brief moment at a Chicago anti gun violence rally in 2018 has resulted in an unexpected friendship between Sandra Steinbrecher, a documentary photographer, and Jasmine, Arlyn and AJ, three young people who were marching for a safer world for all of us that day. In 2019, Sandra used clues from the photo to search for the three teens whose faces fill the photograph. She eventually found them, all seniors at a Chicago public high school. This conversation will touch on youth voices, the power of art to connect people, their friendship, and where the story has taken them after the shutter clicked.

Presented by Sandra Steinbrecher, documentary photographer; Jasmine Alvarez, Arlyn Benitez, and Alhaji Jalloh (AJ), students and rally participants.

Artists featured in the current special exhibition The Outwin: American Portraiture Today, organized by the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C. The competition and exhibition are made possible through generous support from the Virginia Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition Endowment.

The exhibit sponsored locally by Freedom Credit Union and Health New England.
