To the Glory of God, To the Folly of Man

September 30, 2021 @ 12:15 pm1:30 pm
| Cost: $4 | Cost for Members: $2

This presentation by Simon Sibelman will foreshadow the Museum School’s six part lecture miniseries “To the Glory of the Divine… To the Folly of Mankind” beginning on October 13. Humanity has always erected structures to the glory of God: places of worship, sacred sites of memory. Thus, from the ancient world to the present day, we recognize structures dedicated to the divine ranging from massive temples constructed in ancient Egypt or the magnificent gothic cathedral of Chartres. Alongside such sites, we discover monuments erected to the folly of man, structures recalling the action of human beings represented in the Bayeux Tapestry to the extraordinary artistic opulence of Peter Karl Fabergé’s glittering Easter Eggs for the Russian Imperial Court. Come along and whet your tastes for more this autumn!

Presented by Dr. Simon Sibelman, professor emeritus of French and Holocaust Studies (University of Wisconsin Oshkosh), former executive director of the Virginia Holocaust Museum, former director of the Center for Judaic, Holocaust, and Peace Studies (Appalachian State University).

Join us in-person or online!

If you plan to attend in person at the Museums, tickets are available on the day of the lecture in the Welcome Center.

To attend via ZOOM, please register in advance.
