This engaging lecture series will focus on defining “graven images” and how Jews of antiquity and the medieval world created and used art. Jewish ceremonial objects, synagogue architectural design, and the works of several Jewish artists, including Marc Chagall, will be explored. Learn about the role played by the Yiddish cinema industry, as well as the photographs of Roman Vishniac and his bittersweet visual record of a world that would soon disappear. Examine art as a means of both resistance and remembrance of Nazi genocidal policies. Detailed description of each class by date provided with registration.
